JENNIFER HERZIG is an interdisplinary artist and designer working in painting, printmaking and installation. Her fine art work currently focuses on abstractions of the book form, drawing from her fresh, unconventional use of traditional book-making media and techniques. She incorporates letterpress, stitching and painting on book cloth to create reflections on assembly, structure, facade and the origins of content. Ruminations on rhythm, inspired by Herzig’s studies in dance and music, and influenced further through her process (the pounding of the press and the handling of the wooden and metal type) are manifested in her use of patterns – the repetitive impressions of the lines and shapes of a letter or punctuation mark.

my work begins with a thought
round or square,
hard or supple.

one word or many
realized by way of ink,
paper, cloth, paint.

it’s about explanation
sound and music,
content and surface.

Herzig, a native of California, maintains her studio in downtown Los Angeles at the Santa Fe Art Colony. She has a BA from San Diego State University, where she majored in art. She is the founding principal of the design firm, Guink, where she combines her fine art sensibilities with her experience in digital technologies and the corporate design and branding worlds.
